Mobile field service

Built for the person actually doing the work.

No desktop application squeezed onto a phone. Orientra’s field experience is designed around what a technician needs at the job.

What we learned by testing it at phone size

Not in a responsive pass at the end — while it was being built. Testing at 375 pixels found a sidebar that left the work 135 pixels wide, buttons at 26 pixels, tabs on three lines, and a crew member whose lead was somebody else seeing an empty day.

Every control is thumb-sized

Minimum 44 pixels on a touch screen, returning to a denser layout above it — so the office keeps its density without the field paying for it.

One job, one screen

No horizontal scrolling, no nested tabs, no navigating into an administrative area to record two hours of labour.

A crew member sees their day

Assignment reads the roster, not just the lead — so the second and third person on a job see the work they are actually on.

Drafts survive

A half-completed form is not destroyed by a mis-tap on a tablet or a closed tab. That was a real defect in an early version and it is field-fatal.

Photos are evidence

Attached to the job, timestamped, and part of the completed record rather than a folder on somebody’s phone.

The signature says what it means

A customer can confirm somebody attended and that the work was explained. Orientra’s default wording does not let a signature imply more than that.

Close-out that is defined once and enforced every time

Decide what this kind of job needs before it can be closed — a photo, a completed checklist, a signature, a reading — scoped by job type, work type, customer, site, equipment type or agreement.

Then it either informs, requires, or requires an authorised exception. The technician finds out at the start of the job, not when the button refuses at 5:40 on a Friday.

Close-out is not the safety model, deliberately. Safety answers may this work proceed and carries signatures and review. Close-out answers is this record finished.

Putting safety-grade ceremony in front of a forgotten photo is how the safety one stops meaning anything.
